The first thing you will be asked for is your name and the name of the opposing party. Before an attorney can talk to you a conflicts check will need to be run. This usually can occur while you are on the phone.

 

Most family law matters require that you file certain financial documents with the Court. At a minimum your tax returns for the past two years will be needed, as well as your most recent pay stub. (These documents are filed with the court, but are not available to the general public). You can speed things up by bringing these financial documents to the initial meeting.

 

You should also bring any copies of legal paper with which you have been served, and any previous Court Orders that have been filed in your case.

 

The purpose of the initial meeting is for the attorney to get general background information regarding the facts of your case, and to provide you with a general overview of the law. After the initial consultation, if you wish to hire the attorney to represent you, you will be asked to pay a retainer. The retainer is based on the complexity of your case.

 

The attorney's representation of you will not begin until the retainer has been paid.
